Intern Pat's Celtics Deadline Review

The Boston Celtics had the chance to bring in a stud to try and propel them into title contention, but for the 37th year in a row (alternative fact) they didn’t do anything. Twitter was pissed, the fans were pissed, but it might not have been that bad of a move for the future of the team.

Jimmy Butler and the Chicago Bulls have been on the Celtics radar for the last couple of years and it seems as if the Celtics have been “this close” to a deal for the entire time. Chicago is going with the “rebuild on the fly” move and wanted to dump one of their best players for other good players rather than draft picks. Brooklyn’s pick, which will most likely be a lottery pick was up in the air but the Bulls wanted two starters and either Jaylen Brown or Terry Rozier on top of the pick for Butler. That is absolutely ridiculous. Butler is a great player, but he is not even close to worth that much. He’s averaging career highs in points, rebounds and assists but a trade like that would have jeopardized the chemistry and future of the Celtics. Isaiah Thomas is a guy who needs the ball in his hand to make plays and he and Butler would not have worked well together in my opinion.

Paul George has been my favorite player since he put Miami Heat LeBron on a poster in the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals and I would love nothing more than to see him in a Celtics uniform. But the Indiana Pacers are a playoff team and were not willing to completely sell out for George, and he has publically said that he wants to win in Indiana. With only one year left on his contract after this season it was not a guarantee that the Celtics would be able to sign him to a long term deal, and he has said that if it doesn’t work in Indiana he wants to sign with his hometown Los Angeles Lakers in the summer of 2018. Indiana had a similar asking price as the Bulls had for Butler and despite being former teammates with Danny Ainge, Pacers GM and Celtics legend Larry Bird wouldn’t throw us a bone like Kevin McHale did with Kevin Garnett in 2007.

The Celtics have a chance to do some damage in the playoffs this year but there are by no means ready to compete with the elite teams of the NBA for a championship. The Celtics should have made a smaller move to try and get better this year but when it comes to landing a star I think it was smart to sit on the assets. But this summer, there needs to be a legit move to take the Celtics to the moon. With the amount of young talent and draft picks the Celtics have, they are running out of time to take advantage. This year’s NBA draft class is a very good draft and if they are lucky enough to get a top 3 pick in the lottery, I expect them to make a deal. In football they say that if you have two quarterbacks then you don’t have one and that goes for the amount of assets the Celtics have. In Danny we trust? God I hope so.

Go C’s.
