Airport Thoughts With Pat: Bowl Season

I’m currently sitting in the airport while my flight back home from to Boston is delayed three hours (!!!) so naturally I found the closest bar with a million TVs. And as I sit here watching the RIVITING matchup between Appalachian State and Toledo, I can’t help but think about how completely irrelevant 50% of the college football bowl games are. Today officially kicks off “bowl week” in which there is football every day from now until after the championship bowls on January 2nd.
You may think that sounds awesome! On paper, it sounds like the best month of all time but it’s not even close. You may be thinking, “Hey Pat? Aren’t you hyped to watch the Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday with Memphis and Western Kentucky facing off? Or what about the Popeyes Bahama Bowl with Eastern Michigan and Old Dominion next Friday?” My answer would be to shut your mouth and hell no. The only thing that I don’t like more than no football is bad football and the first half of the bowl games are just bad. The fact that a .500 record gets you bowl eligible and into the postseason just seems ridiculous to me but hey, not a lot that the NCAA does really makes sense.
I guess these early bowl games can help you appreciate how good the games between good teams are. But mixing that with how bad every NFL game not featuring the Patriots has been this year means it’s gonna be a rough couple of weeks for football fans.
Maybe this incredibly negative attitude has something to do with the fact my college career is almost over and I’m depressed sitting at an airport bar by myself blogging, but for now let’s pretend it’s because the games suck. Yeah let’s go with that.
