UFC202: The King Is Back

Growing up in the Money Maywether era, i have been conditioned to assume all pay per views are going to be criminally underwhelming and appear more like a game of tag than a fight, but as a dumb american i continue to buy them and finally it paid off. UFC202 was worth all $69.99 and then some. Top to bottom the main card was awesome. The night started off with Tim Means vs. Sabah Homasi. Tim Means, a veteran coming off a suspension for tainted supplements, had to take this fight against Homasi who was making his UFC debut. Homasi, who made a name for him self via the Ultimate Fighter, proved to be tough as nails but was no match for the veteran and ultimately got TKO’d halfway through round number two. Mike Perry, also making his UFC debut, faced off against Hyun Gyu Lim (Picture Yao Ming with ridiculous grey hair). the cocky new comer set the tone at weigh ins pulling a fake handshake on Lim, and backed up every bit of it Saturday night as he knocked Lim out just 1:22 into round 1. Donald “The Cowboy” Cerrone then stepped in against Rick “The Horror” Story, in the second round The Cowboy hit him with a Dicky Ward “head body head” and it was curtains for Ricky and his Story. The fourth fight of the night lasted about as long as it will take to write this sentence, Rumbles Johnson knocked Glover Teixera’s head to he moon just 13 seconds in. Adding some comic relief to the night, once Glover’s head came back down to earth, he had no idea where he was and began trying to grapple with the ref who was helping him not to swallow his tongue. Sorry buddy, the fight much like your brain function, is long gone.
Then to the main event, Conor McGregor Vs. Nate Diaz. Like the first match up with these two, McGregor took advantage early and struck Diaz down a few times while making his face look like Andrea Cornish in The Night Of, in the process. Round 3 and 4 McGregor started to show signs of fatigue and Diaz began to attack McGregor and the tides began to turn. McGregor came back and controlled much of round 5 until the last fifteen seconds when Diaz pulled off a take down and got a few good hammers in. Ultimately it wasn't enough and McGregor won by majority decision 48-47, 47-47, 48-47. Although the fight was close, from a technical standpoint, McGregor won in a landslide. In both fights, Diaz lost about a quart of blood while Conor’s face looked like he just had a post dinner wrestling match with his little brother. To his credit, Diaz is crazy tough and can eat punches like i do a Big Mac, but from a striking standpoint he was no match for Notorious. Another part of McGregor’s game plan was apparently to try to Adam Vinatieri Diaz’s leg in half as he is strong on his frontside like a boxer, and it worked as there is literally no shot of Diaz being able to walk today. His leg buckled just about every kick and McGregor stumbled out of the cage after the fight with rumors of a possible broken foot, and i definitely believe it.
McGregor in his post fight interview offered to fight in a McGregor Vs. Diaz 3 under the condition that Diaz cuts weight and fights him at 155 LBS. Seeing as McGregor is a natural featherweight (145 LBS) and came up to fight Diaz as Welterweight (170 LBS) twice, this is maybe the most reasonable request ever to come out of McGregor’s Guiness tainted mouth. I can promise you two things, 1. when/if McGregor Vs. Diaz 3 happens, i will be watching. And 2, many people have began to say the UFC will turn into the WWE and I'm sure to degree the drama is blown up, but the hate between Conor and Nate is real. The press conference water bottle fight was no stunt, these are two unreal fighters who will try to destroy literally murder anyone in their way.
As a side note for those of you unaware, Conor "Notorious" McGregor comes out to Foggy Dew/Hypnotize remix. In an ultimately troll move, Nate Diaz (Stockton, CA) came out to Ambitionz Az a Ridah by Tupac, and i think the only thing that would make this UFC saga better is if they reignited the east coast/west coast rap war in the process.
Ps. Anyone who says Conor McGregor is a clown/too cocky to a point of annoyance, please refrain from being an idiot in the future. Fighting and every other sport in general, is entertainment, people tune in for both McGregor’s talent and his persona. Like him or hate him, he puts rumps in seats.
