I Took an Impromptu Trip to Tennessee this Weekend

So I had a pretty wild 48 hours this weekend from Friday night til Sunday night and I figured I'd share my adventure. If you followed along on the NEW Keno Radio snapchat (kenoradio, check it out its dope) you know I ended up in Bristol, Tennessee Saturday night. So gather round because this blog will dive a little deeper into how I ended up at the Wold's Fastest Half-Mile.

When I headed into Boston Friday for work, my life looked like it has the last 4 weeks, work Friday, Saturday, & Sunday aka suicide watch. Little side note I am currently on day 30 of a 34 day work week. THIRTY FOUR days straight of work! Captain Fun not approved. In the podcast with Leili a couple weeks ago I said I have become a shell of myself and die a little bit inside every day and this is exactly why. Working every day for a month straight is no bueno and leatds to impromptu trips to the Volunteer State.

Anyways, I finished up work Friday night and was in Boston so naturally I decided to go out and have a night. It was Friday that's what you do. The plan was to kick it in the city for the night then sleep at the big bros casa and head to work Saturday. Ended up heading to Hong Kong to smash chicken sticks and light the barn on fire with some karaoke (Your Love, Outfield obviously). Night came to an end and headed back to my buddies house. Normal Friday night thus far, everything going accordingly.

Then I get a light night call from big bro. Kid found some cheapo tickets to for the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Not Bristol, Connecticut, Bristol, Tennessee. Now I wish I could blame this trip on me thinking we were going to Connecticut but ending up in Tennessee, thats just a classic mix up, could happen to anybody. But I'm not here to make up any excuses, I knew full and well that I was heading south of the Mason Dixon. So when I get the call, I had a few blue cans in me and if you have listened to the Spring Break podcast, you know I'm a huge road trip guy. Always down for a little car ride. So we work out the logistics, pull the trigger, and big bro picks me up around 4 am with his GF (absolute LOONEY TUNE move by her coming, what an idiot!) I hop in the back seat of the car and immediately get my snooze on.

Next thing you know I wake up and am on the boarder of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Still feeling nice from last night I'm like "yo we're heading to Bristol Baby! LFG LFG" . Close the eyes, grab a few more hours of shut eye, and wake up again in Amish Land, PA. And that's where it hit me. That's when I was like yup this was not the best decision I've ever made. Had to shoot boss a t bomb pulling the old family emergency card, which isn't totally a lie because this is a bucket list moment for big bro so I had to be there with him. However I also am fully embracing some horrible karma coming my way.

So at this point we were in too deep had to just go all in and hope for the best. 13 hours later, we arrive in Bristol, Tennessee. Now as soon as we get there it sinks in and I'm like "this is dope and totally worth it". The people, the environment, the ambiance its all so awesome. I'm a huge fan of the south and everything about it so I was loving it. We walk around a litte, soak it all in then make the trek to our seats. BMS is built on a big ole hill and its super tall so climbing up it in the middle of August in Tennessee was the swass capital of the world but I persevered. Finally get to our seats, and they're sick, right on the start finish line a few rows back all set for a great race.

Not so fast. 20 minutes before green flag it starts raining. Then we get some black clouds rolling in. And I'm talking DARK black like darkest I've ever seen. then rolls in the thunder and lightning, followed by an evacuation of the bleachers. Some might say people from the south aren't known for their smarts but o contrare! they knew to get us out of a massive metal bowl in a lightning storm! The weather finally clears up after a 45 minute delay and we head back to the seats. After a prayer, anthem, and a dope fly over, the flag was green and the rubber was burning, IT'S BRISTOL BABY WE'RE GOING RACING!!!

...for 38 laps. Yup. we got 38 laps then the rain rolled back in and they postponed the race til Sunday. It was supposed to pour Sunday and I had work so we had to get back and couldn't stay for Sunday. So we walked back to the car and headed back. 12 hours and 22 minutes back to Boston. 25 hours of driving for 38 laps and 5 hours of Bristol, Tennessee. I took the first shift, drove from 10 pm to 4 am. 2 Monsters, 2 bags of beef jerky and 37 push up in a 7Eleven parking lot in the middle of no where Virginia to keep the blood pumping and the eyes open. Big bro took the wheel and I slept, nay, napped from 4 to 7 am then hopped back in the captains chair to take us home. Back in Boston at high noon and at work for 1.

Was the race worth it? Definitely not. Do I regret doing it? on the fence but I think so. Was driving 25 hours and being awake for 57 of 65 hours this weekend worth the story? You bet your bottom dollar, IT'S BRISTOL BABY!!!!

Also, If you're into SCAR Bristol is a must see, awesome environment, awesome venue, awesome experience, from my 5 hours.

Also, Also, Don't ever make any decisions involving cross country travel after a night of burning the house down in karaoke, you feel invincible
